Sleep Apnea is a serious disorder that causes a person to momentarily stop breathing while they sleep at night, and can affect anyone. Because it causes temporary moments when a person stops breathing, it can lead to the development of other health problems such as heart issues. However, there are factors to be aware of in order to understand what puts you at risk for developing sleep apnea.

Age and Gender

Sleep Apnea can have a major impact on people from all different walks of life. Statistically, men are far more likely to develop sleep apnea than women. However, once a woman reaches menopause age her risk can increase as well. Generally, sleep apnea affects the geriatric population more frequently.

Substance Use or Abuse

Patients who drink alcohol or smoke are also more susceptible to developing sleep apnea.  In fact, smokers are four times more likely to get sleep apnea, as the smoke increases inflammation and fluid retention in the upper airway. Avoiding smoking, drinking, or using recreational drugs can help to prevent the onset of this disorder.
