The wisdom teeth typically appear in adults between the ages of 17 and 25. Not all people have a complete eruption of their wisdom teeth and many experience partial eruption or impaction that can cause pain or discomfort.

Wisdom Teeth Eruption

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that erupt from your gum tissue. If you are like most people, you might be experiencing problems that arise when a wisdom tooth is not erupted or is only partially erupted. If you are suffering from pain associated with your wisdom teeth, seek treatment immediately for wisdom teeth removal.

Prevent Future Pain and Discomfort

It is important to receive a thorough oral examination and panoramic x-ray as a young adult to evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth before they become a painful emergency. Some people do not ever develop wisdom teeth, while others do not experience any problems once their wisdom teeth come in. If you do not choose wisdom teeth removal, you should still have them monitored regularly. Over time, our mouths change and wisdom teeth can cause problems with decay, infection, and pain later in your life.

Wisdom teeth removal recovery can take from a couple of weeks to a few months until you are fully healed. In most cases, you should expect to be reasonably comfortable in about two weeks after your extractions. Typically, patients schedule to take one to two days off of work or school immediately following their extractions.

Prior to your extraction procedure, we will inform you of exactly what to expect during your visit. On the day of your extraction, you will receive local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia. The surgical risks will be discussed before the procedure. Your wisdom teeth can be removed all at one time. If your wisdom teeth have erupted normally, the extraction will most likely be very similar to any other tooth needing an extraction.
